Lois leads an active life, being a keen horse rider and walker. She regularly competes in synchronised horse-riding competitions, and her energetic dog frequently takes her out for miles.
18 months ago while riding with friends, Lois’s horse slipped and fell, rolling onto her leg and causing a spiral fracture of the right femur. This is one of the worst fractures of a bone short of shattering it, and it required the insertion of a metal rod to stabilise the bone and allow it to heal.
A common side effect of this kind of injury is the formation of scar tissue around the broken areas which, in turn, leads to other complications. Although the bone healed well, Lois experienced significant ongoing pain and weakness. This limited her ability to walk and made riding uncomfortable.
On examination, although I was pleased with the way she had recovered, the muscles retained significant amounts of scar tissue that was limiting her muscle function and affecting the nerves nearby.
Shockwave to repair injured tissue
We discussed the options and agreed to try shockwave therapy. In order to go ahead, I needed to get the permission of her orthopaedic surgeon to confirm that it was safe. During treatment, I took care not to treat over the metal implants, to ensure that their integrity remained firm.
Fast results
The results showed quite quickly over the following 6 treatments with the scar tissue shrinking week on week, and strength and sensation in the injured area increasing in equal measure.
By the end of the 6th treatment almost all of the hard lumpy tissue had been reabsorbed. Lois’s sensation returned along with her ability to walk and enjoy outdoor activities.
This was not only a huge relief to her but also to her dog, who was apparently over the moon that things were back to their energetic best!
