Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis at Osteo and Physio

Evidence shows that plantar fasciitis can be treated effectively with shockwave therapy 88% of the time. Usually 4-5 shockwave treatments is enough to completely clear up all symptoms of plantar fasciitis.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition affecting the sole of one or both feet. It can be acutely painful and without the right treatment can make life almost unbearable for the sufferer. Plantar fasciitis most commonly affects people in their 50’s and older and is often associated with fallen arches and poor foot biomechanics. It can also affect runners, especially where the sport has been taken up in later life.

Management usually consists of ice, exercise and arch supports however if the plantar fasciitis becomes chronic then effective options become limited. Fortunately shockwave therapy, now available in our Honiton clinic, has been proven to be highly effective at treating plantar fasciitis once and for all, especially where other treatment approaches have been unsuccessful.

Shockwave therapy is considered to be the most effective and advanced treatment approach for plantar fasciitis.

Shockwave therapy at Osteo and Physio is delivered via a specialist, handheld device which directs high energy impulses in the form of acoustic sound waves through the skin into the affected tissues.

Fully trained, insured and qualified professionals deliver these high powered mechanical waves which cause a chemical process to occur, leading to collagen synthesis, new blood vessel formation, increased healing and cellular metabolism.

Shockwave therapy is backed by evidence and the NICE guidelines.

Shockwave therapy for tendon issues such as plantar fasciitis is well supported by the NICE guidelines and a wide body of research supports its use.

Furthermore, a continually growing body of research regularly demonstrates that shockwave therapy is highly effective at successfully treating even long term and chronic plantar fasciitis up to 88% of the time.

Shockwave therapy can often feel uncomfortable especially in really acute or painful cases of plantar fasciitis, however, experts at osteo and physio are well trained to monitor any discomfort you may be experiencing and then adjust the intensity of the shockwaves accordingly.

You’ll never be exposed to more discomfort than you can handle.

Evidence and experience suggests that 4-6 shockwave sessions are sufficient to evoke desired healing response in the plantar fascia.

Treatments are typically delivered on a weekly schedule
and after the course it is possible that your therapist will arrange a follow-up session after 3 to 4 weeks.

Evidence suggests that shockwave therapy is extremely safe with little to no adverse reaction other than mild discomfort, redness or swelling.

Patients with some pre-existing conditions such as cancer may not be suitable for shockwave therapy however your therapist will ensure that you are thoroughly screened for any potential issues before any treatment is administered.

A course of shockwave for plantar fasciitis is an effective,
non-invasive and inexpensive treatment modality which can
significantly reduce the harmful effects of this debilitating
condition.

At Osteo and Physio depending on the number of treatments a course could cost between £240-500. During your initial consultation and assessment your therapist will be able to
give you further information on how many treatments may be required.

Bilateral, or ‘both sided’ plantar fasciitis is a common occurrence and fortunately your therapist will be able to treat both feet in each session so you won’t need to do two courses of treatment at the same time.

This will need to be discussed in more detail during your initial consultation and assessment.

Ongoing management and after care

It is well known that plantar fasciitis is often a consequence of multiple lifestyle factors.  These factors range from:

The efficacy of shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis will be greatly enhanced if these factors are considered and other interventions are applied. Your shockwave therapist will be able to give you tailored advice on exercise and rehabilitation as well as other lifestyle advice.
