Our Top Tips on How to Help Repetitive Strain Injury in the Workplace

What is a repetitive strain injury?

A repetitive strain injury occurs in the muscles, nerves, and tendons from repetitive movements and overuse. They can commonly occur in the hands, wrists, neck, shoulders, and arms. However, it can happen in any part of the body that can move. Repetitive movement to a particular area, such as typing or using a mouse without proper ergonomics, causes strain to form and worsen over time. Repetitive strain injury could cause permanent damage if left untreated.

How does one get a repetitive strain injury?

Occupational injuries are a common cause of repetitive strain injury. The use of modern technology such as using a computer and mouse at a desk can cause repetitive strain injuries. People who work in an office all day using a computer and mouse are at risk for this type of injury. Poor posture and a poor working setup while working long periods with repetitive motions increases the risk of repetitive strain injury. Poor desk, sitting, keyboard, and mouse ergonomics contribute to repetitive strain injury. Over time poor ergonomics will lead to damage and inflammation to the surrounding tissues leading to a strain.

Repetitive strain injury symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Cramping
  • Tightness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Loss of range of motion
  • Throbbing
  • Weakness

Our top tips to prevent repetitive strain injury:

  1. Keyboard alignment
Have proper keyboard alignment that will allow you to type in a neutral position. Get a protracted keyboard and use a keyboard wrist support pillow.
  2. Take breaks
Schedule frequent breaks and allow yourself to stretch out the at-risk areas
  3. Reduce mouse use
Take small breaks from the mouse and have it close to the computer. Use a mouse pad with wrist support
  4. Adjust seating
Adjust the height of your chair, so you sit with your elbows level with the keyboard and avoid slouching
  5. Screen height
Keep your screen at eye level, so you don’t hunch over
  6. Stand a while
Let your shoulders and back take a bit of a break and stand while you work
