What is Osteoporosis and  who is at risk? 

Osteoporosis is a degenerative condition of the bones where they become weaker due to a decrease in bone mass.  Most often this is associated with hormonal changes that often happen as we age. 
 
If left untreated, the effects of Osteoporosis can be severe.  Problems can include debilitating fractures, chronic pain, loss of independence, and diminished quality of life.

Risk factors for Osteoporosis include: 

  • Aging, especially after menopause 
  • A lack of exercise 
  • Other hormonal changes 
  • If you have family history. 
 
Early stage bone attrition is known as Osteopenia, and is a precursor to Osteoporosis.  Osteopenia can also compromise bone health.
