Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common condition affecting many people who use their arms in repetitive activities such as sports. It can be painful or uncomfortable and limit your ability to live the life you love. Treatment usually involves rest, and painkillers or steroids. Here at Osteo & Physio, we understand how frustrating it can be to have to take an extended break from playing your favourite sport. Thatโs why we incorporate shockwave therapy as part of our treatment for this condition.

What causes tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow is caused by a repetitive overuse of the forearm muscles which attach to the outer elbow. This overuse causes an accumulation of micro-tears over time, which donโt have a chance to heal properly because of repeated overuse. The result is pain and weakness when lifting or bending your arm, gripping objects or twisting your forearm (for example, when opening a jar).
Conventional treatments include:
- rest
- applying ice
- taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication
- support devices
- manual therapy
- physical exercise programme
- corticosteroid injection
According to the NHS, โtennis elbow usually lasts between 6 months and 2 years, with most people (90%) making a full recovery within a year.โ But that might seem like a long time to wait for full recovery! Thatโs why we use shockwave therapy, to speed and support healing.
What is shockwave therapy?
Sometimes called extracorporeal (outside of the body) shockwave therapy or ESWT, shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure used to effectively treat a range of injuries and painful conditions.
Shockwaves are a kind of acoustic wave, which when focused on areas of pain and inflammation, can be directed to stimulate a tissue healing response. These waves are produced by compressing air which is then applied to the painful area via a handheld device. This is different to ultrasound waves in that it promotes regeneration and repair of connective tissue and bones.
For the most effective treatment outcomes, our osteopaths and physiotherapists will use shockwave therapy as part of a tailored rehab programme built on an accurate assessment of your lifestyle, your needs and goals.
What can I expect from a shockwave therapy session?
Shockwave therapy is administered through a small handheld device, held on the skin around the area of injury. The treatment only takes a few minutes. For optimal results, a course of 3-4 treatments delivered once every week is recommended.
